Greetings to Dragon Gate Club Family,

It has been a long time since this column was last updated.  It is almost ten years.  This year I attain the age of 70.  In Asian tradition, this age is considered to be called Koki, rare attainment in life.  However, this is no longer the case.  Our age group is substantially more active in life and profession in recent times.  I continue to strive for further advancement of my career and profession.  One of the advantages of the academic life is continual exposure to younger generations.  This exposure makes my mind fresh.

In the mean time, the research and professional activities of my group at UCLA and Dragon Gate Club continually grow and advance.  At annual International Microwave Symposia, many of Graduate Students in my group not only present papers but are selected as Finalists for Student Paper Competition.  Many of Dragon Club members are now in their prime age with substantial accomplishments in professional life.  Among more senior members of Dragon Gate Club, several professional recognitions are noteworthy.  Dr. Jenshan Lin and Dr. Christophe Caloz were elected as IEEE Fellow recently.  I am sure more will follow.  Professor Samir El-Ghazaly is now President of MTT Society while Professor Clive Tzuang, now with National Taiwan University, is serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Microwave and Wireless Component Letters for which I was the founding Editor-in-Chief in the 1990s. Of course, Professor Amir Mortazawi has been Co-Editor for MTT Transactions for some time.  Professor Roberto Sorrentino has been President of European Microwave Association. Please inform us your recognitions.

I myself also received a number of recognitions.  I was elected to Member of National Academy of Engineering in 2003.  I served as Distinguished Microwave Lecturer for MTT from 2004 through 2006 on the subject of microwave applications of metamaterial structures. In 2009 I received European Microwave Association Outstanding Career Award and was appointed to Distinguished Research Chair Professor, National Taiwan University.

Our research effort has expanded and evolved in several different directions including active antennas, millimeter wave circuits, and retrodirective antennas.  Currently, our emphasis is on microwave applications of metamaterial structures. We developed many unique components and antennas inspired by or derived from the metamaterial concepts.  We have increasing collaboration with industry including Rayspan, Honeywell, SONY, Panasonic, Mitsubishi and NEC to just name a few.

We will see each other at IMS and elsewhere.  Please visit us in person or electronically.
